The scoring
Four things decide the order. Nothing else does.
Every serum is judged the same way, on the same panel, over the same twelve weeks. Growth carries the most weight because it is what people buy a serum for — but a formula built on prostaglandin analogues can never top the safety column, and we say so on the label of every entry.
Measured growth
Millimetres added to the longest third of the lash line, averaged across the panel and confirmed on photographs at weeks 4, 8 and 12.
Safety & tolerance
Reported stinging, redness, dryness and lid darkening. Prostaglandin analogues cap this column whatever the growth figure says.

What is actually doing the work
Almost every lash serum on sale in the UK belongs to one of three groups. Knowing which one you are holding tells you more than any before-and-after photograph.
Peptides
Short amino-acid chains that support the lash during its growth phase. Slower than the alternative — expect week five, not week two — and by far the best tolerated.
Conditioners
Panthenol, biotin, hyaluronic acid and botanical oils. They will not grow a lash, but they reduce breakage, which often reads as growth in the mirror.
Prostaglandin analogues
Isopropyl cloprostenate and its relatives, derived from glaucoma medicine. The fastest results here, and the only group linked to iris darkening, hollowed lids and redness.
Getting a fair result
Four habits that changed our testers' outcomes
The same serum performed differently depending on how it was used. These were the differences that showed up in the photographs.

Apply to a dry, clean lid
Any residue — micellar water included — dilutes the dose and pushes it into the eye.

One stroke, upper lash line only
A second coat does not double the result. It doubles the chance of stinging.

Every night for the first eight weeks
Missed nights were the single clearest predictor of a disappointing week-twelve photograph.

Then drop to three nights a week
Maintenance holds the gain on far less product. Stop entirely and lashes return to baseline in roughly two months.

How long before anything is visible?
Between four and six weeks for a peptide serum, and around three for a prostaglandin formula. Nothing works faster than that, because a lash has to grow out from the follicle — the serum cannot lengthen a lash that is already on your face. Judge at week eight, not week two.
Are prostaglandin serums dangerous?
They are effective and they carry documented risks: iris darkening in blue and green eyes, darkening of the lid skin, and a hollowing of the orbital fat pad. Some effects reverse when you stop; iris colour change does not. They are legal to sell as cosmetics in the UK, but we cap their safety score and label every one of them in the ranking.
Do the results last if I stop?
No. Lashes follow a growth cycle of roughly three months, so within eight to ten weeks of stopping you are back to your natural length. Every serum here is a maintenance product, which is why we score cost per month rather than cost per tube.
Can I use a serum with lash extensions?
Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to use one, because extensions stress the natural lash. Apply to the lash line rather than through the extensions, and check with your technician first — oil-rich formulas can loosen the adhesive.
Is the cheapest serum a waste of money?
Not automatically. A £15 peptide serum will not match the top of this ranking, but it will condition, reduce breakage and hold a lash line that mascara has been wearing down. It is a smaller result for a much smaller outlay.
